Adventure Sites in Emberhollows#
One of the Bleak’s places on Adventure Sites, which has the map of every site. Using a site says how to run one.
Lava tubes and ash caverns under the Sands of Bone, the roots of Mt. Kyros and the volcanic south. The most hostile reach of the Bleak. 11 sites, levels 10 to 28.
- The Ashfall Mouth
The ash-choked head of the Kyros Underflow, a ring of galleries drifted deep with grey ash around the foot of the cinder throat. The way east opens into the lava fissures beyond.
- The Slagfall Drift
East of the Cinderking Vault the causeway gives onto a long downslope of ash and cooling slag, where plated crawlers graze the warm drifts and the dead of the old forges wander up from the galleries beyond.
- The Fissure Galleries
Galleries cut by the fire itself, where a slow river of lava runs bright through the rock and standing jets of flame light the dark. The molten causeway lies east, and the Cinderking Vault beyond it.
- The Cinder Forge
The dead heart of the district: a forge floor of cold anvils and a great bellows gone still, kept warm only by the underflow beneath. A shaft drops from the casting hall to the deep pit where the fire was tapped, and a drake has made the pit its own.
- The Lintel Streets
The western streets of the Sunken City, a town of the Wet Era that the Sands of Bone swallowed whole. The dune roofed its lower streets before it filled them, and the heat rising from the Emberhollows baked that roof into a crust, so the streets under it are still whole: carved lintels over every door, the market plaza where the dead keep watch over their stalls, the elders' hall around its dry basin, and a bathhouse built over a vent that still breathes. South of the baths the floor has broken into a fissure that runs down toward the lava tubes under the Oasis.
- The Obsidian Galleries
Halls of cast black glass, thrown up where the underflow's heat met a seam of sand and set it hard. The galleries ring like struck bells and throw the ember-light back a hundredfold, and the dead of the forges keep to them still.
- The Springfall
Under Moria's ancient Oasis the spring does not rise: it falls. It pours down a shaft from the desert floor into a cool basin where pilgrims once let down their offerings, then runs east and south into the lava tubes and turns to steam. The Ash Road from Menes ends here, at the water. The desert war has been down too: the basin is fouled with Separatist poison, and a Loyalist countermine broke into the caves from the trench lines to the south and never came out.
- The Fountain Ward
The eastern ward of the Sunken City, where the Merchant's Conduit came into the town at the end of its long road from Blithe and filled the fountain of the Spring-Mother. When the water stopped, the town queued here for its share at the water reeve's gate and begged at his court for more, and the queues are still lying in the street. The temple of the Spring-Mother is the one place the restless dead do not enter. Under the reeve's hall a stair goes down to the dry town cistern and the vault where the reeve sealed the last of the water and sat down to guard it, and south of the ward the pilgrims' stair drops into the warm dark toward the spring under the Oasis.
- The Magma Causeway
The heart of the Kyros Underflow, where a broad river of magma is crossed by a bridge of fused cinder and a shaft drops to the Cinderking Vault below. The Cinder Tyrant rules the fire here, and suffers no rival to its heat.
- The Quenching Tubes
East of the Springfall the Oasis water pours into a knot of lava tubes that are not all dead, and every gallery is the meeting of water and fire: steam, hissing glass, boiling runnels. The tubes split and rejoin around a quench pool, run south toward the Kyros underflow, and keep a Separatist fire-cache staged for an order that was never carried out. Below the pool the water gathers in the Boiling Sump, where the spring's own spirit has followed it down and been boiled into something else.
- The Forbidden Ossuary
The catacombs beneath the Monastery of the Yellow Dragon, reached by the hidden stair in Head Monk Gregor's chambers: bone-lined halls where centuries of monks lie entombed, now desecrated into the Serpent's Coin's most secret headquarters. Past the guarded bone-gate lie the ossuary galleries and the Founder's Tomb, a looted treasury of syndicate gold, and, at the deepest point, the ritual chamber where Alderman Valerius directs the corruption of the order over a profane circle scrawled across the honored dead.
