Names#

In the continent of Sedia it is quite common for a person to have only one name and subsequently sometimes a family name. There are only a few who have chosen a middle name. Middle names are a distinction of royalty and as most of the populous of Sedia aren’t royalty, middle names are quite rare. People who are given middle names at birth who aren’t royalty are scorned and frowned upon by everyone, and sometimes imprisoned. Family names are approved by the charter of their perspective city. A group of blood-relatives may create a family name. Sometimes servants or followers of a powerful individual take the name of their Lord as it proves for better identification of where ones loyalties lie. An example of a servential family name is Mandaks Legion where all of his followers and soldiers carry his last name Mandak so that they can be distinguished from the normal common folk of Tharsis. Families are like smaller clans, carrying sometimes their own hierarchy and needs. It has been seen sometimes that families have created a combined bank account for example to better organize their combined funds, or contribute to a mutual fund when the family has emergencies. Funds might also be used for a family residence which could have been bought by a member of aristocracy or royalty within their family. Some older citizens within Sedia around the time of the War of Souls have been known to address people first by their family name and then by their personal name in formal occasions. They believed that the family name was a representation of who that person was and how important they were as members of a family greatly reflect each other. This also constitutes for a hierarchy within families where, because one person reflects the family as a whole, punishment, chores, and praise is first distributed through a family structure in the cities eyes before the feudal court or lord. Not all lords or provinces support this family hierarchy system of discipline, but it is commonplace. Races may also influence the choice of names passed to a child. Though humans and most other races are given names immediately after birth, Dwarves earn their name after they reach puberty. Here are some examples:

Human or Half-elf or Half-orc : Zagreus Desmond Alvander, Verdinicous Flat, Daegon, Melahna
