Carpentry#

The trade of furniture: chests, cupboards, chairs, beds, tables, thrones and everything else that fills a house. A carpenter's work raises what a home is worth, and some of it outlasts the house.

Ranks and quests#

The guild’s hall sets each rank’s quest. Six ranks has what every rank makes, and making something how the craft roll works.

   Rank 1: Inquirer

   Sweep the yard and sharpen every chisel in it, and learn which one is for what.

2. Level20
   Rank 2: Hobbyist

   Build a stool that holds the heaviest person in the hall.

   Rank 3: Apprentice

   Rank 4: Journeyman

   Furnish a room in somebody's home, from the bed to the hat stand.

   Rank 5: Master

   Inferior to Flawless · ×2 worth · 5+5d6 craft roll

   Build pews or a choir stall for a temple, and sit through a whole service on them.

6. Level100
   Rank 6: Artisan

   Adequate to Masterwork · ×3 worth · 6+6d6 craft roll

   Make a throne. The hall will tell you whose.

The work#

Not every piece can be made from every material. Most furniture takes a major material (wood, stone or metal) and a minor one: metal fittings, or leather and cloth for upholstery. Wicker and splint work each have their own difficulty.

Building a piece#

Carve parts shapes them with a chisel, mallet and lathe. Prep assembly bores the holes with an auger, gimlet or wymbylle, and assemble parts fits them together, cleaned up with a plane, mallet and file. Stain wood lacquers the finished piece and polish wood seals it.

The guildmaster#

Odile Fenn furnished half the Grand Library in Crecia and still goes back every spring to fix the chairs the scholars lean back in. She keeps her yard at the Tradesmen’s Gate, because every plank bound for the Heights passes through it and she likes to look at the timber before the gentry ruin it. She takes apprentices from anywhere, and all she asks is that they bring a piece of furniture they made themselves, however bad.

Find Odile Fenn at the Tradesmen’s Gate at Drumund, in Crecia. It’s the guild’s only hall: you join there, and you come back to it for every rank’s quest, inquirer to artisan.

Who takes it up#

The classes whose work carpentry fits best. Any class can join any guild.

Priest Temples need pews, choir stalls and a dais, and a priest who builds their own never waits on a donor. A natural fit Monk Monks build their own monasteries, and they already have the patience a carpenter needs. How it shows#

None of this changes a roll. It’s how the people around you can tell what you do for a living.

The library’s missing room

The Grand Library of Crecia has asked Odile Fenn for a new bookcase in its locked wing, and the plans leave a space behind it that shows up on no floor plan. Odile built the old one too, forty years ago, and she remembers what she was told to forget. She’d like someone to look before she starts work.
